Our 7th Year with Honduran Coffee Alliance
We have worked with Sean and the folks at the Honduran Coffee Alliance since 2019 and the coffee we direct source with their help have always been amongst the most popular coffees on our shelves. In the last six years, we featured the Honduras Princesa Diana but the farmer, Edwin Nicolas, had to sell his coffee early this year and we decided to go with another lot that we had used last year.
This year's coffee is the Galeas Family Microlot and is a woman produced lot. This coffee comes from Merlin Medina Galeas, her sister Jeny and their mother María. Their story is one of hard work and perseverance, where parents sacrificed so their children could build a better life.
The Coffee
This is a super tasty, washed processed coffee is a great example of a classic Honduran coffee flavor profile. It’s a mix of Catuaí, Lempira and Parainema varieties.
The coffee has a cinnamon, brown sugar and mildly nutty flavor with a touch of a dark chocolate taste. It's a very easy light roast to drink with a low acidity and mild brightness that pairs well with the sweet, mellow taste and has a smooth finish.
If you're not normally a light roast coffee drinker, this is a very easy coffee to work into your routine to try a light roast.
More Information on the Galeas Family
María grew up in Intibucá, where she spent her school vacations helping on her father’s farm. Years later, she and her husband moved to Marcala, where they worked tirelessly on other farms and in various jobs until they were finally able to buy their own land. When Merlin and Jeny finished their studies, their parents gave each daughter a portion of the farm to begin their own path in coffee.
The farm became a springboard for the sisters’ futures. Both Merlin and Jeny later purchased additional land in La Paz. Jeny graduated from university with a teaching degree and is now a primary school teacher. Merlin completed the IHCAFE Five-Star Cupping Certification, and that same year her coffee ranked 34th in the Cup of Excellence—a milestone that positioned her among Honduras’s emerging specialty coffee producers.
Today, Merlin and her husband Hubert are not only producers but also key cupping partners of Honduran Coffee Alliance. Together, they opened a cupping laboratory where they provide services to other farmers, helping raise the quality of coffee across their community.
For Merlin, coffee is deeply meaningful because it is a family crop. She actively involves her two children, a boy and a girl, in both production and cupping, teaching them the values of hard work and passion for coffee while they continue their schooling.
